"Uniting Our worlds"

Over 800 etegami were displayed in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government office building in Shinjuku and displayed support for the Tokyo 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Bid Committee.  The exhibit closed on June 14th and will move to the Osaka Etegami Hall from July 14th to 18th.

Here are a few of my favorites from the Tokyo exhibit:

The flags of the participating countries with the country names written in katakana.

A runner in the Olympic torch relay is featured the left and the Olympic Flag makes a prominent appearance on the right.

More Olympic etegami – the one on the left features Tokyo Tower one of the city’s iconic landmarks.

On the left is an Olympic gymnast on the high-bars and is one of my favorite olympic etegami.

"Etegami is a Japanese folk art consisting of simple hand-painted drawings accompanied by a few apt words, and they are almost always done on postcards for quick and easy mailing."

The beauty and talent on display in these etegami created in support of the Tokyo 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Bid Committee made quite an impact and combined the popularity of the Olympics with the grass-roots popularity of this rustic Japanese folk art.

Read more about the Japanese Folk At of Etegami in a guest post by Deborah Davidson on The Nihon Sun, Deborah is a Hokkaido-based translator and Etegami artist, who writes about etegami and shares some of her lovely work on her website, dosankodebbie’s etegami notebook.
