The infrastructure of hosting the Games is a major consideration for any city. In Tokyo’s case, the idea is to host the Games in the ‘heart of the city’. This type of ‘compact concept‘ for an Olympic Games is an unusual proposition. But with Japan’s efficient and extensive public transport system it is possible.

This piece of video shows some of the structures in place and some of the structures planned.

The Games will be hosted in two zones: the Heritage Zone and the Tokyo Bay Zone.

This is the area that already consists of the venues used during the 1964 Games: Yoyogi Stadium,
Tokyo Dome, Kokugikan, Budokan, National Stadium.

The second zone is the Tokyo Bay Zone which is where many of the new venues will be constructed. This zone will host the Olympic Village and the Olympic Stadium.

To provide a link between these two zones, the Marathon course will be staged. It will start from the 1964 legacy venue, Kasumigaoka National Stadium, and finish at the Olympic Stadium.

The Summer Olympics were hosted by Tokyo in 1964 and is still home to a number of the venues that played an integral part in the success of those games. The Prince Chichibu Memorial Sports Museum houses a large collection of Olympic memorabilia and displays that cover the history of the games starting with first Olympiad. Exhibits at the museum include the winner’s podium from the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, torches, athletic uniforms, tickets, scale models and posters that in combination provide an impressive overview of the history of the Olympic Games. (via Tokyo2016 A Bid for More Olympic History )
